.asp file type #1: Active Server Page script page

An asp file extension is associated with the ASP Classic server side scripting engine used to dynamically generate web pages. An asp file contains Microsoft Active Server Page source code scripts. The ASP Classic is obsolete and it was replaced by ASP.NET.

Further details:

The asp file extension is associated with Microsoft Active Server Page source code script file.

The asp files are used to create dynamically generated websites and other webpage content.

The ASP code is inserted into static HTML pages with <%%> tags by default, although these tags can be changed to anything you would like. So, like, if you were a PHP programmer forced by his workplace to use ASP, you could change those percentage signs to question marks.

The ASP is Microsoft's proprietary answer to PHP server side scripting language or Cold Fusion. The new version of ASP and not backward compatible is ASP.NET (aspx file extension).

Technically, ASP is not a scripting language; it's an open standard object model for web services, or something along those lines. So, although the vast majority of ASP pages are written in Microsoft's VisualBasic, they can actually be written in any language for which an ASP thingy has been written. Presently, this means you could also write ASP pages in JavaScript or PerlScript, and maybe one or two others I haven't heard of. The defining characteristic that makes it ASP is the way that you access the 'Write' method of the 'Server' object in order to output "Hello World!".

Microsoft has added a lot of extensions to ASP that are very difficult to find information on in a Google search because they are the same as top-level domains, like COM and .NET. As far as I understand it, COM added the ability to write some code for your ASP pages in a separate file, compile it to assembly, and register it as a service with the operating system. You just have to make your code in the form of an object, which you instantiate from within your scripts to use it. Thus, you can write code for the web in C++ or whatever, and get really fast speeds.

Since the ASP pages are processed on the server, website visitors do not see the actual ASP code, just the common HTML pages generated from the scripts within the page.

The .asp pages typically use the ASP extension rather than HTML file extension.

What is the meaning of a file extension?

File extensions are characters that appear after the dot in a computer file's name. For example, the file "unknown-file.asp" has the file extension "asp". This is used to identify which program should open the file or what file type it is.
File extensions help you organize and manage files. They provide a quick and easy way to identify and associate the file type with the appropriate software.
