The azw file extension is associated with Amazon Kindle, a software and hardware platform developed by Amazon.com subsidiary Lab126 for reading e-books and other digital media. Three hardware devices, known as "Kindle", "Kindle 2," and "Kindle DX" support this platform, as does an iPhone application called "Kindle for iPhone".
Amazon Kindle eBook files are stored in Mobipocket eBook image file format, but they have file extension renamed from mobi or prc to azw and often contain Digital Rights Management.
The azw files with DRM can be read only in the Amazon Kindle device or Amazon Kindle applications, but AZW files without DRM can be read for example in the Mobipocket Reader Desktop. Just rename azw file extension to mobi or prc.
